Research Interests:
Dr. Preston consults with school nurses on strategies to promote youth mental health in rural schools, and developed an innovative school nurse simulation bootcamp, designed in partnership with currently-practicing school nurses. She serves on the planning committee for the annual Region VII ESC school nurse conference and speaks at continuing education events for school nurses.
 
Dr. Preston鈥檚 program of research is centered on systems thinking in rural communities to promote positive adolescent development, particularly psychological strengths such as hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism (the combination of which is coined as psychological capital). Another aspect of her work is psychometrics, also known as measurement science. She is joint copyright holder of the Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire in English (PPQ-E), a 26-item scale which measures the multidimensional construct psychological capital.
