Biography
Joseph Clarkson is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of
Texas at Tyler. His research focuses on the history of political thought, including
the history of constitutionalism, theories of the state, sovereignty, and the rule
of law. His teaching interests include ancient and modern political philosophy, international
relations, and comparative constitutionalism.
His current work examines interwar theories of the state and law in the German-speaking
world. More specifically, his current book project reconstructs Hermann Heller's theory
of the sozialer Rechtsstaat, an important concept in many civil law systems that was
originally coined by Heller. Dr. Clarkson is also working on a translation of Heller's
essays.
