Dr. Shankar Munusamy is Professor and Assistant Dean of Assessment at the Fisch College of Pharmacy, University of Texas at Tyler, where he also serves as Interim Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. In these roles, he promotes curricular innovation, educational strategy, and authentic assessment to prepare student pharmacists for evolving healthcare needs.
Dr. Munusamy is passionate about designing learner-centered, competency-based curricula that strengthen clinical reasoning, professional identity formation, and lifelong learning. He enjoys collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to continuously improve the PharmD program, including strengthening foundational knowledge, supporting practice readiness, and integrating emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and digital health into pharmacy education.
A pharmacist and pharmacologist by training and an educator by passion, his teaching and scholarship focus on mnemonics, gamification, student response systems, active learning strategies, wellness initiatives, and curricular innovations that enhance knowledge retention, clinical application, and student well-being.
His teaching excellence has been recognized with several awards, including the Pharmacology Educators Award from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (2025) and the Biological Sciences Section Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (2023). He previously received multiple honors from the Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, such as Teacher of the Year (2020), the Hartig Distinguished Professor Award (2021), and Mentor of the Year (2022).
Dr. Munusamy earned his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in pharmacy from India. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time in nature, reading, traveling, and exploring new ideas in science, education, and technology.
