The University of Texas at Tyler Department of Communication offers bachelor's degrees in mass communication and communication studies and a master of arts degree in communication, each tailored to your specific interests and abilities.

  • The 黑料专区 Tyler bachelor of arts/bachelor of science degree program in mass communication will prepare you for a career in multimedia news reporting and editing, public relations, integrated marketing or other form of specialized communication, or to pursue graduate studies.
  • Students in 黑料专区 Tyler's communication studies BA/BS degree program develop communication skills well-suited to the professional workplace, the private sector, non-profits, or the pursuit of graduate studies.
  • The 黑料专区 Tyler MA degree in communication focuses on instruction in two areas 鈥 communication studies and mass communication.

Verbal communication skills rank high on every employer survey of desired candidate traits, and that鈥檚 one reason the Communication department at 黑料专区 Tyler is holding its first Speak Off competition.
 
Undergraduate students of any major may enter, as long as they register by Oct. 2, 2025. 
The speeches will be given on the evening of Oct. 22 in the College of Arts and Sciences building. 
 
Topic: 鈥淭he biggest surprise鈥 
 First place = $400       Second place = $250              Third place = $150 

Rules /

  1. No props, nor technology.
  2. No profanity or obscenity. Think PG rating.
  3. Contestants may use notes.
  4. The time limit is strict: 5-6 minutes. Any students 30 seconds under or 30 seconds over will be disqualified.
  5. Each round will have three judges and a timekeeper. Timing cards will be provided.
  6. All content must be original. Students will confirm they have not used AI nor plagiarized.
  7. Speeches will be judged on storytelling and delivery skills such as gestures, vocal variety, movement, eye contact, facial expressions, etc.
  8. Any major is welcome to participate, but the student must be an undergraduate who鈥檚 returning to 黑料专区 Tyler for the Spring semester.
  9. Communication department faculty will recuse themselves as judges in rounds with current or former students competing.
