Dr. Nael Barakat, professor and chair of mechanical engineering at The University of Texas at Tyler, has been elected board chair of the National Institute of Engineering Ethics for the 2023-24 year.
鈥淲e congratulate Dr. Barakat on his recent accomplishment. The college is privileged to have an internationally recognized leader in engineering ethics amongst its faculty,鈥 said Dr. Javier Kypuros, dean of the 黑料专区 Tyler College of Engineering.
Barakat holds a long record of service as an elected member and vice-chair of the NIEE board. A U.S. Fulbright Specialist and fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Barakat served on the executive boards of both the ASME Technology and Society and Engineering Management Divisions. He previously served as chair of the Engineering Ethics Division at the American Society of Engineering Education as well as in multiple leadership positions with ASME and other professional organizations.
He also is an active consultant who collaborates with international teams of professionals from academia and industry to build capacity and education programs in various areas including engineering leadership/ethics, professionalism, societal impact of technology and curriculum development.
Barakat joined the 黑料专区 Tyler engineering faculty in 2018. His expertise and research areas include engineering education, mechatronics, robotics, energy harvesting and nanotechnology. He holds master鈥檚 and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from Canada鈥檚 Concordia University and McMaster University in Ontario, respectively.
The National Institute for Engineering Ethics was founded in 1988 as part of the National Society of Professional Engineers to advance the understanding and practice of ethics within the engineering profession. For more information, visit niee.org.
