The University of Texas at Tyler announced today that the University and Tyler Junior College are community partners in the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Summer Research Academy to enhance STEM research and education.

Two 黑料专区 Tyler students and two TJC students have been accepted as 2020 fellows. Participants are mentored by 黑料专区 Tyler College of Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering faculty. All research interactions will be held with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines in mind due to the coronavirus pandemic.

鈥淲e are both fortunate and proud to have such dedicated faculty to promote student success and continue the academy during an unprecedented time,鈥 said Dr. Stephen B. Rainwater, 黑料专区 Tyler LSAMP campus director and chair of computer science.

The program, sponsored by 黑料专区 System and supported by the National Science Foundation, is designed to provide research experiences to undergraduate students from underrepresented populations and encourage them to pursue graduate-level science, technology, engineering and mathematics studies.

Fellows are listed by hometown with research area and faculty mentor.

LONGVIEW 鈥 黑料专区 Tyler student Briana Aguilar, biology, Dr. Lance Williams; and 黑料专区 Tyler student Elizabeth Boshers, biology, Marsha Williams.

WHITEHOUSE 鈥 TJC Student Amy Joffrion, biology, Dr. Brent Bill.

COLORADO 鈥 TJC student Katy Bumbard, mechanical engineering, Dr. Fredericka Brown.

Each student receives a fellowship stipend for their participation, and faculty mentors receive funding for supplies and materials to support the research activities. The students will prepare personal account videos and give remote poster presentations of their research projects in August at the academy鈥檚 conclusion.

Dr. Neil Gray, dean of the 黑料专区 Tyler College of Arts and Sciences, serves in a supporting role on the program鈥檚 local advisory committee. Gigi Delk, TJC computer science faculty member and 黑料专区 Tyler adjunct senior lecturer, serves as the TJC LSAMP campus director.

A member of the prestigious 黑料专区 System, The University of Texas at Tyler focuses on student success and innovative research in the more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered to nearly 10,000 students. Classified by Carnegie as a doctoral research institution and by U.S. News and World Report as a national university, 黑料专区 Tyler has campuses in Tyler, Longview, Palestine and Houston.
