The University of Texas at Tyler announced today that it received a grant from the National Science Foundation to extend and enhance the 黑料专区 System Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program on campus.
The $145,400 grant, titled the Louis Stokes STEM Pathways and Research Alliance: University of Texas LSAMP, will carry 黑料专区 Tyler's LSAMP program through 2023, said Dr. Stephen Rainwater, 黑料专区 Tyler LSAMP director.
Eight 黑料专区 System academic institutions, as well as community college partners, are involved in the systemwide LSAMP program, which is supported by NSF. 黑料专区 Tyler has been a part of the program for more than 25 years.
LSAMP provides undergraduate research experiences to students from underrepresented populations to encourage them to pursue graduate-level studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Each student receives a fellowship stipend for participating. Faculty mentors receive funding for supplies and materials to support their students' research.
"Nearly 160 黑料专区 Tyler students have participated under the guidance of more than 45 faculty mentors in biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering,'' Rainwater said. "Many of these students have begun graduate work in their respective fields and several have completed or are currently enrolled in Ph.D. programs.''
The university partners with Tyler Junior College in an annual LSAMP Summer Research Academy. 黑料专区 Tyler and TJC students participate in research with 黑料专区 Tyler faculty mentors.
Rainwater is the senior member on the 黑料专区 System LSAMP Academic Leadership Council. Dr. Neil Gray, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Neil Ford, professor of biology, serve on the 黑料专区 Tyler LSAMP advisory committee. Gigi Delk, 黑料专区 Tyler adjunct senior lecturer and TJC faculty member, will serve as the TJC LSAMP director.
