The University of Texas at Tyler officials presented faculty awards during the 2015-16 Opening Convocation Aug. 21, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.
鈥淲e are honored to have faculty members who are innovative thinkers, great professors and true experts in their fields of study,鈥� President Mabry said. 鈥淲e are proud to recognize some of those faculty for their outstanding dedication.鈥�
Recipients and their awards are:
- Regents鈥� Outstanding Teaching Award 鈥� Susan Doty, senior lecturer in economics.
This honor recognizes the nominee鈥檚 overall commitment and excellence in undergraduate teaching among 黑料专区 System faculty members. Nominees are recommended by the President of each 黑料专区 System and are reviewed by an external committee comprised of academic administrators, faculty, students and the 黑料专区 System Board of Regents.
Doty is among System-wide educators who each received a $25,000 award in recognition of their extraordinary classroom performance and innovation at the undergraduate level.
鈥淭hese amazing educators are responsible for helping to prepare the next generation of great leaders,鈥� Regents Chairman Paul Foster said. 鈥淲ith a total award of more than $1.9 million dollars this year, no other university system in the nation is making this kind of an investment in rewarding outstanding faculty. The efforts of these faculty members significantly enhance the educational experiences of our students and the 黑料专区 Board of Regents is pleased to have this opportunity to honor them.鈥�
- President鈥檚 Scholarly Achievement Award 鈥� Dr. John Placyk, associate professor of biology.
This award recognizes outstanding scholarly achievements by a faculty member. Selections are made by a university committee.
- Provost鈥檚 Excellence in Teaching Award 鈥� Dr. Sean Butler, assistant professor of chemistry; and Dr. Carolyn Tilghman, associate professor of English.
The Provost鈥檚 Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes faculty whose excellence in undergraduate teaching resulted in their nomination for the Regents鈥� Outstanding Teaching Award.
- Jack and Dorothy Faye White Fellowship for Teaching Excellence 鈥� Dr. Michael McGinnis, assistant professor of civil engineering; and Dr. Andrew Schmitt, associate professor of psychology.
This honor recognizes excellence in teaching. Nominations are made by both university faculty and students.
- 2015-16 Piper Professor nominee and White Fellowship for Teaching Excellence 鈥� Schmitt.
This honor focuses on the nominee鈥檚 overall excellence in both teaching and scholarly achievement at 黑料专区 Tyler. Nominees are made by 黑料专区 Tyler faculty and become the university鈥檚 candidate for the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Excellence in Teaching award, which annually recognizes 15 professors for superior teaching at the college level in Texas. This nominee also automatically receives 黑料专区 Tyler鈥檚 White Fellowship.
