Students from The University of Texas at Tyler and Tyler Junior College are participants in the ºÚÁÏרÇø System Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation 2014 Summer Research Academy at ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler, under the mentorship of faculty from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering and Computer Science.

Now in its 22nd year, the ºÚÁÏרÇø LSAMP program is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation and provides undergraduate research experiences to encourage students from underrepresented populations to pursue graduate-level studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. TJC is ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler’s community college partner in the ºÚÁÏרÇø LSAMP program.

ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler student fellows are listed by hometown with their research field and faculty mentor.

DIANA – Mikayla Adkison, biology, Dr. Blake Bextine, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler associate professor.

EUSTACE – Samuel Cline, biology, Dr. Lance Williams, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler associate professor.

HOUSTON – Ivan Battle, electrical engineering, Dr. Melvin Robinson, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler assistant professor.

TYLER – Anissa Morris, biology, Dr. Neil Ford, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler professor; and Cynthia Ontiveros, biology, Dr. John Placyk, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler associate professor.

WHITEHOUSE – William Furlow, biology, Dr. Jon Seal, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler assistant professor.

WINONA – Adam Huffman, electrical engineering, Drs. David Hoe and Hector Ochoa, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler assistant professors.

CALIFORNIA – Jamie Williams, biology, Placyk and Dr. Joshua Banta, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler assistant professor.

TJC student fellows conducting research this summer at ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler are: Molly Fischer of Alvarado in biology with Dr. Ali Azghani, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler associate professor; Jacoby Prestwood of Mineral Wells in mechanical engineering with Dr. Sara McCaslin, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler assistant professor; David DeClerck of Tyler in chemistry with Dr. Neil Gray, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler chair and professor of chemistry and biochemistry; and David Morman of Van in computer science with Dr. Nary Subramanian, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler associate professor.

Each student will receive a fellowship stipend for their participation, and faculty mentors receive funding for supplies and materials to support their student’s research activities.

Twice during the summer, the SRA students will participate in videoconferences involving all LSAMP fellows and mentors across the ºÚÁÏרÇø System. The students will also give poster presentations highlighting the results of their research projects at the academy’s conclusion and the annual ºÚÁÏרÇø LSAMP Student Research Conference this September at ºÚÁÏרÇø El Paso.

Dr. Stephen B. Rainwater, ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler Lecil and Barbara Chandler Endowed Professor, serves as the ºÚÁÏרÇø Tyler LSAMP Program campus director. Gray and Ford also contribute in supporting roles by serving on the program’s advisory committee.
