Hanah Goetz of Lewisville, a senior mathematics major at The University of Texas at Tyler, has been accepted into this year鈥檚 黑料专区 Tyler Research Experience for Undergraduates Program.
Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the program annually recognizes outstanding mathematics majors nationwide to participate in research at the university. Students work in teams, and each three-member team is paired with a 黑料专区 Tyler REU faculty research mentor.
黑料专区 Tyler has served as a REU institution site since 2011. This year, the program begins Tuesday, May 27 and continues through Friday, July 18.
鈥淲e each have a team of three students who work with us for eight weeks in the summer on a question related to our own research interests,鈥� said Dr. David Milan, 黑料专区 Tyler assistant professor of mathematics, who serves as a campus REU faculty mentor. 鈥淭he goal is for the students to produce a paper capable of being submitted to a professional journal and a research poster to present at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, a national meeting of mathematicians that takes place every January. We are excited that Hanah, one of our own math majors here at 黑料专区 Tyler, will be joining us.鈥�
Dr. Christina Graves, 黑料专区 Tyler assistant professor of mathematics and White teaching fellow, serves as Goetz鈥檚 REU faculty mentor.
鈥淚t has been a pleasure watching Hanah grow as a person and a student these last few years. I am looking forward to working with her this summer,鈥� Graves said.
Goetz will graduate with a bachelor of science this fall. She plans to pursue a master鈥檚 degree and teach mathematics abroad.
She currently serves as the 黑料专区 Tyler Math Club president and a supplemental instructor for calculus II. Goetz also won 黑料专区 Tyler鈥檚 Integration Bee Competition last year.
Her interests include mountain biking, the Spanish language and playing video games.
Housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, the 黑料专区 Tyler Department of Mathematics offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs, including the bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 of science as well as the bachelor of science with teacher certification.
