The University of Texas at Tyler School of Education was recently recognized by The Salvation Army in Tyler, Dr. Ross Sherman, College of Education and Psychology interim dean, announced.

The Salvation Army in Tyler honored 黑料专区 Tyler with the 2013 鈥楶assion Award鈥 for their involvement with The Salvation Army Youth Program last summer. 黑料专区 Tyler education majors tutor K 鈥 Grade 5 children, using a hands-on approach to learning. They assess the children in the areas of math and reading and plan their lessons accordingly.

鈥淭he University of Texas at Tyler School of Education has shown a strong commitment or 鈥榩assion鈥 for The Salvation Army Youth Program and has really invested themselves into it on a daily basis throughout the summer,鈥 said Cindy Bell, who serves as the organization鈥檚 director of development. 鈥淭heir genuine compassion and love for the children we serve is evident. They act as an advocate on the children鈥檚 behalf to bring them new opportunities and better resources. We recognize their 鈥榩assion鈥 for these children and the positive impact they are making on their lives.鈥

This is 黑料专区 Tyler鈥檚 second year to participate in the summer program.

鈥淚t is such an honor to receive this award. I can speak, not only for myself, but also for the 黑料专区 Tyler students, that this experience made a lifelong impression on our hearts,鈥 said Priscilla Gilpin, 黑料专区 Tyler lecturer in early childhood education. 鈥淣ot only were the 黑料专区 Tyler students able to actively teach the children, but they also established relationships with them. I believe this award is an example of the true passion our students have for teaching.鈥

For 黑料专区 Tyler student Karin Davison of Flint, working with the children was a 鈥榝antastic experience.鈥

鈥淭he children and staff were very welcoming. My students were enthusiastic and engaged in the lessons. I felt that the time we spent with the children was a rewarding experience for me because I got to see so many 鈥榓-ha鈥 moments as we worked together,鈥 she said.

The 10-week summer program reaches more than 30 children each year.
